The Interior Minister of Lithuania, Agne Bilotaite, has said Belarus is pushing migrants across the Lithuanian border to exert pressure on the country.

“euronews”
reports that the minister claimed nine people were found without shoes and without properly dressing for winter. Two migrants were said to be hospitalized.

There were reports that a Sri Lankan man lost his leg and five toes to frost bite after he was trapped in a no-man’s land between the two countries earlier in the month.

Lithuania and Belarus have been sending migrants back and forth since 2021 because of tensions between the two countries.

The migrants who are mostly from the Middle East and South East Asia were claimed to be deliberately brought to Belarus. The European Union has accused Belarus of plotting the crisis as a reaction to sanctions.

Out of the nine individuals taken to hospital, four were given the chance to apply for asylum.

Meanwhile, Bilotaite has said that migrants attempting to cross the border barefoot may not be enough grounds for entry into Lithuania or asylum.
