Authorities in Germany have decided to accept migrants and refugees from Italy.

Schengen Visa reports that the German government had initially announced the suspension of a plan to suspend the voluntary solidarity pact, under which Berlin took in migrants from Italy. However, according to the Interior Ministry, the gear change is due to the high immigration pressure on Italy.

Germany will be accepting 3,500 asylum seekers. Nancy Faeser, the Interior Minister said, “The reason we have suspended the procedure…is that Italy has shown no willingness whatsoever to take back people under the Dublin procedure. Now it’s of course, clear that we will meet our obligation of solidarity.”

Giorgio Meloni, the Italian Prime Minister has urged the EU to act jointly in order to prevent migrants from North Africa from reaching the Mediterranean. She has promised that her country will take action in response to the increased number of migrants.

In its own part, the EU has introduced a plan to help the Italian government handle the number of refugees and asylum seekers as a result of the record number of migrants who reached Lampedusa last weekend.

The Europen Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen said, “We will decide who comes to the European Union and under what circumstances, and not smugglers and traffickers.”
