You were a teacher. Why did you leave teaching?

I have always loved Teaching. It is one of my callings. I was always passionate about working with the youth. However I began to experience frustration and fatigue with the failures within the administration of the education system. My job as Teacher became a task. That’s when I knew I had to move on.

How did you find teaching when you were still a teacher?

Teaching in the earlier days was a joy. It was fulfilling to help guide our young people. Delivery of the curriculum was probably about 40% of what I did. It was a privilege to be Father, counsellor, protector and guide to hundreds. It’s always a pleasure to meet students who are grateful for the lessons taught both inside and outside the classroom. But Teachers today are burdened by too much administrative work and unable to be a true teacher.

You’re into music. What genre of music do you play?

I write and perform Calypso – The music of Trinidad and Tobago as well as Reggae, Folk and World Music.

Have you released any single?

I have released about 2 albums and close to 30 singles.

What cause do you stand for?

I am for truth and right. I have been a student of Black History and culture for approx. 30yrs. I am passionate about the resurgence of African Peoples where ever we may be. Within recent times I have begun to pursue the Indigenous culture that lies within me. I am Part Indigenous and Part African.

You’re also an OAP. How are you finding it?

Very Interesting. I never planned to be on Radio. However, the opportunity came and I accepted. I am currently into my tenth week 22 -26th Nov. It’s a learning experience and a fantastic one as well. I am coming to appreciate more music and developing a greater appreciation for artistes who produce good music. My Show – JUST GOOD VIBZ with Nerukhi airs on www.ourcultureourvibztt.com Mon – Fri 8 – 10 pm Eastern Caribbean Time.

Tell us about your childhood.

My childhood was interesting when I look back on it. There was not much money but we never felt poor. My Father did everything to ensure that we were well fed, clothed and schooled. I am thankful that my parents were strict. I can see the results of their upbringing in my life today. The values they instilled and the examples they taught just by their life are priceless.
I was an above average student but never felt like I was a part of anything. It was later on when my search started that I understood why.

Tell us your happiest day, so far.

I have come to recognize that happiness doesn’t come from things. I am learning to be joyful regardless of circumstance and to enjoy the blessings that come from so doing.
