My country, Peru, is best known worldwide for two things, its cuisine and Macchu Picchu, the latter being the heart of one most important ancient world cultures, the Incas.Sin embargo, y a nivel literario, somos conocidos como un país de poetas. En ese momento sentí que tenía la libertad de escribir sobre cualquier tema y sin la necesidad de rima y métrica. Los años han pasado y ahora reconozco que la métrica y la rima ya no son una muralla sino un puente para hacer una mejor poesía.
At that moment I felt that I had the freedom to write on any subject and without the need for rhyme and meter. The years have passed and now I recognize that the meter and the rhyme are no longer a wall but a bridge to make better poetry.Los temas que han sido una constante en mi poesía son el tiempo, su personificación como Historia, y los espacios. The themes that have been a constant in my poetry are time, its personification as History, and spaces. I also recognize that the concern of where memories go after this life has caused much of my poetry to revolve around the words death, transcendence and years. En general tengo un sistema para tratar el tiempo como un ente poético que busca la memoria y su destino final. En esta pregunta voy a describir no mi vida como poeta, sino la vida de mi visión de la poesía.
In this question I am going to describe not my life as a poet, but the life of my vision of poetryAl empezar a escribir, veía a las emociones como objetos a ser descritos. Esta era mi visión positivista de la poesía influenciada por mi formación universitaria como ingeniero. Con esta retórica es que nacen mis tres primeros libros Tetrameron (2003), Lumen (2007) y La Radio Futura (2008).
When I started to write, I saw emotions as objects to be described. This was my positivist vision of poetry influenced by my university training as an engineer. It is with this rhetoric that my first three books Tetrameron (2003), Lumen (2007) and La Radio Futura (2008) were born.
Entre los años 2009 al 2014 viajé por sur américa gracias a la poesía. Visité Ecuador, Perú y Cuba y esos viajes me ayudaron a comprender más cosas. En esos años, también, comencé a leer mucha ciencia ficción y novelas históricas con un sentido existencialista del tipo heideggeriano como Per Lagertvitz, Mika Waltari o Irving Wallace que me dieron una nueva perspectiva sobre la poesía.
Between 2009 and 2014 I traveled through South America thanks to poetry. I visited Ecuador, Peru and Cuba and those trips helped me to understand more things. In those years, too, I started reading a lot of science fiction and historical novels with an existentialist sense of the Heideggerian type like Pär Lagerkvitz, Mika Waltari or Irving Wallace that gave me a new perspective on poetry.
Desde entonces, considero que la poesía es una forma de conocimiento del mundo y de estar en el mundo (Dasein). Por eso los siguientes 3 libros: Osario de Criaturas Perplejas (2014), La Música del Hielo (2015) y Hombre Fractal (2018) tuvieron esa condición de búsqueda de la Idea del Conocimiento del Mundo desde una intimidad.
Since then, I consider that poetry is a way of knowing the world and being in the world (Dasein). That is why the following 3 books: Ossuary of Perplexed Creatures (2014), The Music of Ice (2015) and Fractal Man (2018) had that condition of search for the Idea of Knowledge of the World from an intimacyEl último libro que publiqué, Jardín Mecánico (2020), y otros dos que estoy escribiendo van en un tono más íntimo y relacionado con este espíritu de aislamiento que nos rodea. En ellos he roto mis límites para saber hasta donde puedo ir. Es una forma de auto conocimiento con mi escribir y pensar.
The last book I published, Mechanical Garden (2020), and two others that I am writing are more intimate and related to this spirit of isolation that surrounds us. In them I have broken my limits to know how far I can go. It is a form of self-knowledge with my writing and thinking.
Do you think it is possible for poets to shape the future alongsidehistorians, actors, filmmakers, politicians and academics turnedwriters turned into poets?
Diseñar el futuro? Humildemente solo escribimos algunas cosas que serán leídas en un futuro y quizás resuenen. Aunque no es poesía sino narrativa ¿1984 no es más actual que cuando fue escrita?Design the future? We humbly only write a few things that will be read in the future and perhaps resonate. Although it is not poetry but narrative, is 1984 not more current than when it was written?Mucha de la actividad humana se basa en eso, dejar legados para el futuro. El hombre del futuro, por mas unidimensional que lo intenten volver, tiene esa necesidad de humanidad.Much of human activity is based on that, leaving legacies for the future. The man of the future, no matter how one-dimensional they try to return, has that need for humanity.
Por todo lo dicho, el tiempo es mi tema más querido. Soy una especie de devorador de tiempo y lo hago acompañado de música.For all that has been said, time is my most beloved subject. I am a kind of time eater and I do it accompanied by music.
Encuentro mi inspiración no solo en los poetas que han forjado la poesía actual, como son Rilke, Trakl, Watanabe, Tranströmer, Södergran, Tarduf, Boberg Dragseth, Lezama, Kozer y otros; pienso también en todos los músicos que se han dedicado a la música popular del siglo 20 y 21 como Lou Reed, David Bowie, Roxy Music, Kraftwerk, Joy Division, New Order, Depeche Mode, Souxie and The Banshees, Jesus and Mary Chain, Echo and The Bunnymen, Bolshoi, Sandra, Soda Stereo, Virus, Sister of Mercy y otros tantos. ¿Qué sería mi escritura sin esos sonidos?
I find my inspiration not only in the poets who have forged current poetry, such as Rilke, Trakl, Watanabe, Tranströmer, Södergran, Tarduf, Boberg, Dragseth, Lezama, Kozer and others; I also think of all the musicians who have dedicated themselves to popular music of the 20th and 21st century such as Lou Reed, David Bowie, Roxy Music, Kraftwerk, Joy Division, New Order, Depeche Mode, Souxie and The Banshees, Jesus and Mary Chain, Echo and The Bunnymen, Bolshoi, Sandra, Soda Stereo, Virus, Sister of Mercy and many others. What would my writing be without those sounds?
Where does poetry end and begin for you, what is your basic humanneed and drive for it, what is your understanding of it, how do youget to grips with it? Is there anything else that you would like toshare with us and thank you so much for your time.
Poetry is a form of knowledge and through it we can know the world, language and finally ourselves.
La poesía también debería tener como fin el ser un universo estético que nos ayude a releer a este en el que vivimos. Poetry should also aim to be an aesthetic universe that helps us reread this one in which we live.

Siempre habrá discusiones sobre la función social de la poesía, una discusión que viene desde los años cincuenta en mi país; se hizo muy fuerte en las décadas siguientes y en los dos mil gira hacia el uso y des uso del lenguaje.
There will always be discussions about the social function of poetry, a discussion that has been going on since the 1950s in my country; it became very strong in the following decades and in the 2000s it turned towards the use and disuse of language.
Yo creo que al final la labor social de la poesía termina siendo la de reunirnos alrededor de alguien que nos cuenta una historia, la cual será contada por otro y así hasta el fin de los tiempos. La función social de la poesía es la memoria.
I believe that in the end the social work of poetry ends up being that of gathering around someone who tells us a story, which will be told by another and so on until the end of time. The social function of poetry is memory.
