THE LIBRARY! By Adewale Sobowale

Toronto is a great city!

It’s great not because it’s the capital of Ontario province. Ontario, of course, is a province in Canada!

Neither is it great because of its dynamic metropolis with a core of soaring skyscrapers which are not even as tall as the impressive CN towers.

This post is singing the praises of Toronto because of its extensive investment in libraries. The project is called the Toronto Public Library System.

Toronto’s public libraries are serving a population of 2.73 million. It has the largest public library system in Canada and had averaged a higher circulation per capita than any other public library system internationally.

This made it the largest public neighborhood based library in the world. In North America, it had the highest circulation and visitors.

It has over 12 million items in it’s collection. The Toronto Public Library System was founded in 1884.

Now, wait for this:

There are 100 libraries in the Toronto Public Library System!

This, of course, doesn’t include other libraries like the YMCA library and the Goethe Institute.

In Africa, the libraries of note are in Egypt (4), South Africa (4), Kenya (1), Ghana (1) and Eritrea (1)!

Nigeria doesn’t have any library of note!!
