UNITED NATIONS (contd.) – Adewale Sobowale

Jerry is a Nigerian. He goes into the United States for a conference in 2016. After the conference, he decides to stay in the U.S.

He gets a job which pays much more in a week than his monthly pay in Nigeria. Even then, the job is ‘under the table’.

To legalise his immigration in the U.S. he decides to marry a wife. But it is a contract marriage. The woman, an akata, charges him $1000.00. But that’s not the end of the story.

He pays the woman’s rent. Indeed, he also provides for the real husband. Yes, the woman claims to be married and she’s pregnant.

Jerry gets a temporary work permit. That brings an automatic increase in his take home pay. That’s the beginning of his problems.

The woman wants much more. Jerry insists an agreement is an agreement. He says increment is not a part of their agreement.

The woman then threatens to withdraw from the contrat. She goes to inform the immigration.

The immigration invites Jerry. They show him the facts. However, instead of doing the woman’s will by deporting him, they give him sometime to settle with the woman or return to Nigeria as soon as possible.

Nigeria is definitely not attractive to Jerry. So, rather than going to Nigeria he goes to Canada.
