The Dominican Republic is deporting Haitian migrants. However, The Guardian reports the authorities in the country are focused on people based on their appearance.

Officials of the United States have therefore warned “darker skinned” Americans. They might be arrested mistakenly.

According to the Dominican Republic, it has deported 43,900 migrants most of whom are Haitians. They include children who went to Haiti without their parents.

Many countries and human rights agencies have condemned the move.

The Dominican authorities, according to the United States embassy, have failed to respect the arrested people’s legal status in the country. They have also refused to respect the nationality of the arrested people.

The embassy also says some detainees are held without being able to challenge their detention. They do not have access to food or even washroom facilities sometimes for a long period.

But in defense of its stand, the Dominican Republic says there is no proof of any human rights violations.

The country’s ministry of information declared that the government could not believe “such a harsh insinuation” being made about the country.
